For years ZMA has been known as a popular supplement for helping to enhance muscle size and recovery following workout sessions. However, recently it has also gained popularity as a safe, effective sleep aid. Comprised of a combination of zinc, magnesium, and Vitamin B6, ZMA was tested extensively during an eight-week research study at Western Washington University. The results were impressive: it was proven to significantly improve the length and quality of sleep time in the test subjects. The supplement was effective in helping people to fall asleep and remain asleep, with the added benefit of more coherent and detailed dream recall. Test subjects reported falling asleep more naturally that with other sleep aids they had tried in the past and they did not experience the groggy, "drugged" feeling they were left with after taking many of the other sleep aids.
It was also determined that ZMA is more effective as a sleep enhancer when room temperatures are set at a lower degree. The average temperature found to make sleep more restful when combined with the supplement was 63°-66° Fahrenheit. It is recommended that anyone taking the supplement as a sleep aid avoid any type of caffeine products. As caffeine is a stimulant, it will work int he system to counteract the effects of the sleep supplement, causing restlessness and possible discomfort.
It is important to follow package directions when taking ZMA in order to experience it's benefits to the fullest. As always, check with your doctor before taking any supplement or sleep aid.
